ABT confirms insurance position on nail products containing TPO

Following feedback from members and consultation with industry bodies, ABT has updated its position on insuring nail technicians who use products containing TPO.

As previously outlined in communications with members, a ban on the manufacture of nail products containing TPO came into force on 15th August 2026. By 14th February 2027, distributors/suppliers must cease selling such products. 

Following consultation with and clarification from the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), ABT will continue to insure nail professionals in England, Scotland and Wales who use products containing TPO past 14th February 2027, provided those products were purchased before this date. 

CTPA has worked with the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) and Trading Standards to interpret the UK Cosmetics Regulation and align on the position that professional users may continue to use products already obtained before the deadline.

“We know the nail industry has faced uncertainty around the continued use of products containing TPO after 14th February 2027. ABT's priority is to protect policyholders while ensuring our position reflects the latest industry guidance.

“Following clarification from the CTPA, we can confirm that, in Great Britain, nail products containing TPO purchased before the sales ban may continue to be used professionally until they are used up. We hope this provides reassurance to ABT members.”

TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) is a photo initiator used to help gel products harden and cure under UV and LED light, while also supporting anti-yellowing performance. Nail gels and gel polishes formulated without TPO are unaffected by this ban.
