Expert Advice: Out of Office, Still Online
Alicia Humphreys shares how to keep your socials active while you’re on holiday.
Running a business and trying to take a well-earned break? The juggle is real. Whether you're a solo biz owner doing it all or managing a small team with staff off for the summer, it can feel impossible to step away without your socials going silent.
But here's the good news: with a bit of prep and the right tools, your business can stay visible and you can enjoy that cocktail in peace.
Here's how to make it happen:
Step 1: Batch your content like a boss
Before you switch on that out-of-office, set aside a couple of focused hours to create and plan your content in one go. Here's how to make batching a breeze:
•
Pick four to six key posts to go out during your break (think behind-the-scenes, top tips, seasonal offers or feel-good posts).
•
Use your go-to Canva templates to speed up the visuals.
•
Write your captions in a Word doc or Notes app first – less faff, more flow!
Remember: You don't need to post every day. It's about staying visible, not burning out before your break!
Step 2: Use a scheduling tool (your new best friend)
•
Once your content's ready, pop it all into a scheduler like Meta Business Suite, Metricool, Later or Planoly – whatever works for you.
•
This means your posts will go out on autopilot while you're off enjoying a cheeky beachside G&T.
Bonus tip: If you've got Stories to post too, many schedulers now let you plan reminders or auto-publish!
Step 3: Set expectations (and don't feel guilty!)
If you're the main person replying to DMs or comments, let your audience know you're away and when you'll be back. You can:
•
Add an auto-reply to your Instagram or Facebook inbox.
•
Pin a post or pop a quick Story up before you go.
•
Let your clients know via email too – it's all about clear comms.
Taking time off isn't a weakness, it's a business strength. Your energy is your most valuable resource!
Final tip: Reuse & repurpose
Now's not the time to reinvent the wheel. Got a great post from last year that still hits? Repost it with a new caption or graphic. Client review you never got round to sharing? Now's the moment!
Holiday mode & online presence? You can have both.
Taking a break doesn't mean your business disappears. With a little forward planning, your social media can keep doing its thing while you do… absolutely nothing (except maybe topping up your tan).
